Historical Tradition

 exceeding your expectations

Oak Crest was founded by local philanthropists to meet a growing need for care of older adults. In 1901 George and Mary Lord leveled their home and donated the site for the construction of the Old Peoples Home of Elgin. In the 1950’s the name was changed to Oak Crest Residence and in 2000 the Atrium was added.

Great stories are meant to be told.

In 1904, the stories of old people without family and no place to go when funds ran out or if they needed help with chores, were a community concern. The principal founder of Oak Crest and local philanthropist, Mary Carpenter Lord discovered an unexpected solution while traveling in Europe: the discovery of a concept where older people would live together and help one another to not only survive but enjoy their days together. She brought the idea back and shared it with others who came together and donated funds to go forward with “The Old Peoples Home of Elgin”. Mary’s husband, George Lord, the Elgin watch factory treasurer, was convinced that the idea had merit to the extent that he donated their home site and began the building project. Today that novel project remains in effect with the same mission of providing a comfortable home and assuring dignity for older adults. Renamed “The Atrium at Oak Crest Residence” with expanded services and a reputation for exceeding expectations Oak Crest is and remains a living demonstration of ingenuity and dedication.
